About Our Energy Code Calculations & the Pathways to Passing
The State of Florida’s residential Building Code requires that all new construction, as well as most additions and renovations, comply with the Florida Building Code Energy Chapter 4. Florida Energy Code calculations based upon 2020 Florida Building Code Energy are done by Calcs-Plus using EnergyGauge software, a time-tested tool with comprehensive features that allow us to account for even the smallest of details when completing your project’s energy code calculations. The State of Florida provides two pathways to pass the code:
Performance Pathway
This is the most commonly used of the two available pathways. It allows energy trade-offs and estimates the building’s energy consumption based on three factors:
- Heating
- Cooling
- Hot water
In this pathway, a mock building (which has the same size and number of bedrooms as the proposed building, but some glass floor areas) is created using code-minimum energy factors. The energy profile of the mock building is compared to the energy profile of the proposed building, which has to meet or exceed the mock’s energy profile to pass code and be eligible to receive a permit.
Prescriptive Pathway
This pathway is much simpler. A proposed building’s energy profile must meet Florida Energy Code’s specific requirements for U-values and R-values, which are assigned to building materials. However, this pathway is not always applicable; it’s most often used in projects involving home additions or space renovations.
