Completing Residential HVAC Load Calculations Throughout Florida

The HVAC system is arguably the most important feature of any home here in Florida. That’s why it’s so important for home builders to not only use reliable, efficient products when installing these systems, but also to ensure they can work effectively to shoulder the load they’ll be subjected to. Calcs-Plus is in the business of ensuring Florida builders’ projects get approved—and built—with fast, accurate HVAC load calculations. We’ve helped countless builders get project approval with code-compliant, permit-ready HVAC solutions since 1991, and we’re ready to assist you no matter where in the state you’re building new homes or additions.

Need HVAC Calculations?

When Are HVAC Load Calculations Needed?

The State of Florida requires a Manual J® load calculation for each new residential building prior to permitting, and it must be specific for the building in question. This is because Manual J calculations are used to determine a building’s heating and cooling load. Existing homes may require a load calculation if building improvements have occurred and the existing A/C is being replaced, if an addition is made to the existing building (including garage or lanai conversions), and when a building is being diagnosed for moisture intrusion. Load calculations are also needed for:

  • Replacing an HVAC system in a remodeled home
  • Adding rooms or square footage
  • Diagnosing issues like high humidity or moisture intrusion

How Does Calcs-Plus Complete HVAC Load Calculations?

Our HVAC Load calculations are based upon ACCA Manual J, and they are done through industry-leading CHVAC software. New-construction HVAC load calculation is performed from plans and specs. The proposed building orientation, location, and proposed building materials are input into the CHVAC software room by room with windows, lighting, and people loads as prescribed by ACCA. Duct loads, ventilation, and infiltration are added to the final calculation, and the building’s heating and cooling needs are then calculated. We work directly from architectural plans and specifications, taking into account:

  • Building orientation and location
  • Insulation levels and building materials
  • Window sizes and types
  • Room-by-room layout
  • Occupancy, lighting, and appliance loads
  • Ventilation, infiltration, and duct system losses

The result is a detailed HVAC load report that guides proper equipment sizing and meets permitting requirements.

Why Accurate Load Calculations Matter

Too often, HVAC systems are oversized “just to be safe.” But oversizing leads to:

  • Short cycling (which reduces efficiency and equipment life)
  • Poor humidity control
  • Uneven temperatures and reduced comfort
  • Higher upfront and long-term operating costs

By right-sizing your system using Manual J, you get:

  • Better comfort
  • Improved energy efficiency
  • Compliance with Florida Building Code
  • Peace of mind that your system is designed for your home
